Review Of The N97 posted by Hottest Offers on Oct 6th 2009 08:16
The Nokia N97, successor to the legendary N95 and N96, has been around for a few months now so it’s about time that a comprehensive review of its key attributes and failures was conducted. The N97 features a touch-screen and slide-out qwerty keyboard, and features the Symbian S60 Version 5 operating system for smart phones. Whilst it almost delivers everything that the consumer wants in usability and extra’s it fails in providing actual raw power. The phone is not as svelte as we would have liked but it’s not ugly. It feels lumpy and at 15.9mm thick it is understandable why; it doesn’t have the solid yet slim class of Nokia’s E series range. The plastic back cover will annoy you once you here the creak’s from its ill fitted design. Other than that though the phone feels strong and the mechanism for revealing the qwerty keyboard is innovative in its styling and satisfying in its ‘pop’ (You will understand when you hear it!). The redesign is a huge improvement over its N series predecessors. Just to elaborate on the sliding mechanism due to it being a great feature of the phone. It slides at an angle. This means that when you place the phone down on a flat surface to watch a film the screen is still visible without the need for a stand. It is also very useful when you are typing, so bravo to Nokia for creating another innovation in the mobile market place. The hinge also feels strong and sturdy and I am sure that it could withstand a few hard bumps from over enthusiastic users. The qwerty keyboard is useful for those touch typists who need to feel like they are actually clicking a key rather than pressing a virtual keyboard on the touch screen. It has 1mm of spacing between the keys that helps a lot with mistyping and the overall impression that I received from the keyboard was positive. It also contains a directional pad for the menu’s for certain applications that may not have been designed for the N97 touch screen interface. It is a nice addition to have and when you want to have a more sensitive scroll (in documents or spreadsheets) it really becomes apparent why it is needed. Now to the touch-screen interface and although it feels quick to respond, the occasional non-recognition of a touch meant that we were longing for the capacitive touch screen used by many other brands. The difference being that a resistive touch-screen (like the one in the N97) requires pressure to register what you are doing, whereas a capacitive touch-screen registers the electrical impulses of the finger when it is close to the screen to follow what your finger is doing. Capacitive screens feel solid, and rarely have an issue with registering what you are doing on the phone. This is one of my biggest gripes with the N97. Nokia did include a stylus with the N97, but that doesn’t really solve the problem. The camera is excellent and the quality of images taken is outstanding for a phone that is not billed as being an actual camera phone. Images are strong and vibrant without appearing too sharp. The 5 mega pixel camera is a worthy addition to the N97. Other key features are the speedy 3.6mbps HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity. For web obsessed users this phone is excellent and allows speedy access to the net and although the factory packaged browser is rather ‘crappy’ the new Oprah Mini browser (that runs immaculately on the N97) is one of the best browsers for a smart phone that I have ever seen. That takes me nicely onto the best feature of the phone. New applications and widgets are being developed every day by individuals around the world and there are a number of very useful apps that are already out for the phone. These include SmartMovie that allows you to play almost all video files that you throw at it; WeFi that connects to an available open network connection the moment it is available and Handy Taskman that allows you to manage currently used programs and displays used and available memory (much like task manager in windows). Overall I have to say this is a superb phone that I can definitely recommend.
