Thanks for tuning into part 3 of ‘How to go green and save money…’, I thought a good topic to cover in this chapter would be Car Rental. This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart as I come from a ‘two car family’ and I wanted to see whether we could make do with a single car. To my surprise my family managed to make do and when we did need to use a second car we rented through Sixt. We managed to save a lot of money whilst also knowing they we were doing something positive for the environment. If, like a huge part of the United Kingdoms’ households, your family has two or more cars, do you think you could make do with just one? Add up all the outgoings that the second car costs you; insurance, tax, MOT, garage bills, price of the car. Think about whether you are getting your money’s worth especially when you consider that from the moment you buy your car it starts to lose money. Choosing the occasional taxi trips or renting a second car for the weekend could save you a bundle of cash. Also it allows you the option of being able to rent a larger car, van or something sporty for the weekend. There are also car clubs that allow you to rent a car on an hourly basis and could save you a fortune over the price of owning a car. If a majority of your car use is in the form of trips to the shops or local amenities try considering sharing your journey with friends, extended family or neighbours or even better consider public transport? Alternatively consider walking or using a bicycle and you could be getting exercise too and you could save a lot more money by cancelling that gym membership!! |
